FRANCO DE TOLEDO ART PROJECTS, IN COLLABORATION WITH CIRCUIT FESTIVAL, HAS GREATPLEASURE IN PRESENTING FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SPAIN THE INTERNATIONAL JOINT EXHIBITION TITLED FROM WARHOL TO THE EAST VILLAGE (THE ART OF BEHAVIOUR).

This joint exhibition counterpoints artistic and
socio-cultural realities from both the east and the west, through performances realized “in parallel” during the late eighties and early nineties.

More Information

In the first place, this exhibition shows for the first time in Spain the complete collection of photographs which portray the artistic collective most representative of the “art of action” in China; BEIJING EAST VILLAGE, from which have arisen various of the most relevant artists in modern day China such as, among others, Cang Xin, Ma Liuming, Rong Rong, Zhang Huan, Zhu Ming.

All of these at the start of their careers came together in the East district of Beijing, which had become by the end of the eighties and beginning of the nineties, one of the most abandoned zones in the city.

These artists with their actions and revolutionary artistic discourses, transformed not only that district of the city, but also the complete panorama of Chinese contemporary art and their unstoppable world projection was accomplished using their only resource: their own bodies along with very intense sense of collective purpose.

In the second place and at the same time ANDY WARHOL, with his buoyant attitude was changing the direction of universal art at full speed, showing to us our society driven by show-business and consumerism in the form of
ART, a posture which has held sway since then.

On a certain occasion this father of Pop Art played up in front of the camera of CHRISTOPHER MAKOS, with
whom he had a close friendship. It was he who also travelled to Madrid to portray “la movida Madrileña”, the result of which is now considered one of the
best documents portraying that particular time.

CHRISTOPHER MAKOS is now a member of the HILTON BROTHERS alongside PAUL SOLBERG, with whom he is working on the series ANDY DANDY, to which SOLBERG contributes images of flowers which somehow emphasize those unusual portraits of WARHOL.

In the action ANDY DANDY; WARHOL dresses up using some wigs and a few other props to give life to LADY WARHOL, in a game of identities which shows the break with stereotypes and which in this exhibition provides the perfect counterpoint when we attempt to understand the problems and differences in artistic attitude between the east and west at that time, and consider how everything has evolved towards the present with a central axis in common: “the body”, performancized, policitized,
ritualized and where the term “performance” is used not as understood in the west as “live” art, but rather as they prefer to define it in China as “THE ART
OF BEHAVIOUR”.
